Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in Inaugural Speech

On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.
