Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
