A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
